IN VINO VERITAS

“In Wine There Is Truth”

IN VINO VERITAS is an ancient Latin phrase which translates literally as “in wine there is truth.”  The ancient Greeks referred to wine as the divine nectar and the celestial liquid.  Wine is without a doubt one of the single most complex and pleasurable beverages known to humankind.  Join us at the Newburgh Wine and Arts Festival on a journey of truth and discovery through a series of short educational programs to help enhance your wine knowledge and experience.

Pinot Gris / Pinot Noir

Value-Based Wines: Big Flavors for Small Bucks

2:00 - 3:00pm

Ron Hull noted wine authority and educator, shares his passion for fine wines.  He will tell us how we do not have to spend big money to get a nice tasting bottle of wine.  From California and Washington to South America , Spain , and Italy , producers are making affordable wines of steadily increasing quality.  This session will explore some of the options and trends to discover where those best buy bottles are coming from and which ones are available in our state.

Pairing Wine and Food is Like Choosing a Tie

3:00 – 4:00pm

Once upon a time there were hard rules about what wine to serve with dinner.  “Red wine with beef.  White wine with chicken or fish.”  Twenty years ago the new rule became, “If you like it serve it with anything.”  Wherein, lies the truth?  For every food action, there is a wine reaction.  Tim Mills, a connoisseur and true wine expert, will share some guidelines that will help us select the right wine to enhance our meal.

Hosting a Wine Tasting Party at Home

4:00 – 5:00pm

Invite your friends to a Wine Tasting.  Frank Hijuelos a New Orleans transplant and student of “the fruit of the vine,” will tell us how to throw a successful wine-tasting party.  It is easy, fun, educational, and you and your friends will have a terrific time.  In this session, we will not only learn how to host a tasting party, but also sample several choices of a particular varietal noting the differences in aroma, taste, and texture.

Frank Hijuelos, The Town of Newburgh

Make Your Own Wine – No Experience Necessary

5:00 – 6:00pm

Winemaking can be a novel experience in its planning, making, tasting, and sharing with others.  It can add to the joy of having a good time with good company.  Today the quality of home made wines is better than ever.  Tom Arnold makes over twenty varieties of wine and has helped hundreds of women and men learn the art of winemaking.  In this session he will explain how easy and how much fun it is to make your own wine at home.  We will learn the process as well as the necessary equipment and chemicals to make, bottle, and store our own wine.
